SOLD--Superb 18th century.The date on a blade is 1207 (Hijra) what gives 1792 gregorian. Turkish Ottoman Sword Yatagan in the scabbard with a characteristic walrus ear shaped hilt. DETAILS: the hilt is made of two large pieces of walrus ivory mounted in gold gilded metal decorated in a typical Balkan raised knobbed design, the recurved single edged blade with a narrow fuller is ornamented with silver and gold inlaid Arabic calligraphy, in its original leather covered wooden scabbard with brass fittings. REFERENSES: The Yatagan sword was very popular not only in Turkey but also in many Balkan states and some Eastern European countries such as Ukraine and Hungary.
MEASUREMENTS: The total length with the scabbard: 77 cm (30 1/4 in). CONDITION: Two cracks in the ivory hilt, otherwise in good condition. |
