Antique Brocade Dragon Robe Chinese Qing Dynasty
[C84]
Antique 19th century Chinese Qing Dynasty Kesi Dragon silk summer Robe. Hand woven brocaded with metallic threads Ch'i-fu decoration, with nine five-clawed Principal Long Dragons amid clouds chasing a flaming pearl (symbolizing the Buddhist notion of enlightenment) with two vertical running dragons positioned side by side surrounded by various auspicious symbols and cranes with heavy brocade sleeve bands. The lower border of diagonal bands and rounded billows represent a sea-wave with water rocks on the centre symbolizing the earth mountain the entire symbols on the Robe represent a schematic diagram of the universe. A waving silk brocade required great skill and was a time consuming process, requiring more time compared to embroidery work, and mostly was made for the Imperial court. Dimensions when placed flat: Approximately. 145 cm (57 in) by 129,5 cm (51 in). Condition: The Robe is in good condition considering its age, there are no holes, repairs, or patches.
