Antique African Helmet

An unusual antique African dance helmet with tall crests in the shape of a stylized antelope with straight tapering horns and slender snout. Carved in low relief in geometric motifs and painted in brown ochre with black and white pigments. Mounted on the helmet form with pierced base around the rim for the attachments and decorated with cowrie shells painted and incised with geometric design. Condition: damage to the rim with some erosion, split on the joins between horns and ears, traces of old wood warms holes. This is a truly authentic African art with an excellent fine age patina. It comes from Canadian estate sale and unfortunately I don’t know what part of Africa this crest came from. High: 33 inches (76 cm).
