Antique African Bronze Mask
[#T30]
A rare antique early 1900s African ceremonial bronze mask from the Congo with two holes punched on the sides and forehead, and nicely made mouth, nose and eye holes. The holes on the sides are definitely made to fasten the mask to the head however the bronze is heavy therefore it is possible that the mask was custom made work for a wealthy African tribesman's funeral ceremony. The bronze is with a nice old patina, the interior of the mask is marked with a hand painted inventory number. Dimensions: 20, 5 x 12 cm (8 x 4 5/8 inches). A mask of similar form is published on the front page of the book "Out of Africa Sub-Saharan Traditional Arts" by Roy Sieber and also on page 53 no13.
