Antique 19th century, Jerusalem School, Mother-of-Pearl Orthodox
Christian Icon of convex oval form finely carved in low relief with a
central oval medallion depicting The Adoration of the Shepherds
flanged by two small round medallions with the winged heads of
cherubs, the border is engraved “Bethlehem” with a round medallion
below enclosed by three crowns and a star above which symbolizes the
Three Kings and The Star of Bethlehem, and surrounded with pierced
floral adornment.
REFERENCES: A comparable Mother of Pearl Icon which looks as if it
were made by the same artist with a similar design and details,
including the medallion with the three crowns and the star above, and
also Bethlehem written in the Latin alphabet, except that the central
medallion depicts The Last Supper, is published in the catalogue of
the famous State Hermitage Museum “CHRISTIAN IN THE HOLY LAND – The
Art Of Melchites And Other Denominations Of Orthodox Church” Saint
Petersburg 1998 Page 83 and dated by the Museum experts to the
1830s-140s. Also in this catalogue are published many other similar
Mother-of-Pearl Orthodox Christian Icons bur not of such fine quality
as this one.
CONDITION: The icon is in very good condition free of cracks, repairs,
or restorations. The frame is a later addition.
MEASUREMENTS: Dimensions with the frame: 30.2 cm x 29 cm (11 7/8 in x 11 3/8 in).
Dimensions without the frame: 15.8 cm x 14 cm (6 1/4 in x 5 1/2 in).
Due to the shiny surface of the Mother-of-Pearl, it is difficult to
photograph, the pictures do not show the details of the carving or the
real sparkling pearl color of the surface.
