Antique 18th century Spanish Colonial Santos [D153]
|
 |
|
An exceptional authentic antique Spanish colonial 18th century Spanish
America Santos figure, possibly a depiction of Jesus Christ. The
sculpture is finely carved from wood in the typical colonial manner
with its original polychrome tinting decorated with gilt highlighted
designs on the clothing. This figure was purchased from a local
Canadian antiques estate sale, the previous owner had purchased the
figure from a Californian antique dealer in the early 70s.
Due to the great popularity of Spanish colonial antiques among
collectors, the market is flooded by reproductions of the Santos
without any historical or investment value. We provide our clients
with a certificate of authenticity to ensure clients that an item is a
genuine antique, not a reproduction.
CONDITION: The sculpture is in its original condition with no modern
restoration. There are losses and damages to this old figure, as can
be seen in the photographs. Most noticeably, one arm and foot is
missing, a part of the cloak is broken and missing, with worm holes,
some paint chips, and there is some damage to the base. There is
over-all wear and a darkened patina to the painted surfaces of the
piece, as can be expected from a piece of this age. The wood is still
solid, although very light, the polychrome surfaces are mostly intact
and firm with the smooth painted gesso showing through under the
polychrome. Measurement: Approx. 36.3 cm (14 1/4 in) tall. |
