Antique 18th century Ottoman Turkish Sword Yataghan Yatagan

Antique early 18th century, Turkish Ottoman sword Yatagan. DETAILS: The recurved single edged steel blade with narrow fuller and ribs at the back. The forte is decorated on each side with cusped gold panels containing deeply hand chisel floral motifs of stylized tulips, the back of the blade is decorated in good foliage. The hilt is of characteristic form fitted with ear shaped grips-scales and enclosed by steel straps with brown finish richly damascened in gold coftagari with scrolling floral tendrils terminating at the top with raised rounded turquoise. Condition: Old repair in the one of the grips-scales, otherwise in good condition. REFERENCES: 1) Yanissari – "History Symbols Weapons" by G.E.Vvedensky. 2) "Zbirka Jatagana" by Dora Boskovic. 3) "Les Armes Blanches du Monde Islamic" by Alain Jacob. 3) "The Janissaries" by David Nicolle. The Yatagan was the favourite sword of the Janissaries and was also very popular in many Balkan states and some Eastern European countries such as Ukraine and Hungary. The overall length is 67.5cm (26 5/8 in).
