Antique Indo Persian dagger (Kard) Persia 17th-18th century Safavid
Dynasty. DETAILS: A sturdy tapering single–edged Damascus steel Wootz
blade with a ladder pattern, with a thickened point designed to break
armour. A large shaped panel on each side of the forte carved with
arabesques around similar panels with gold inlaid Arabic inscriptions.
A ridged spine adorned at the forte by a panel of arabesques and two
cartouches with gold inlaid inscriptions. The hilt is in the
characteristic style with bone grips-scales retained by four rivets
and enclosed by silver straps engraved with a fine floral pattern.
CONDITION: The gold inlaid is partly worn out, one of the ricasso
steel facing is most likely a later replacement. MEASUREMENTS: Overall
length: 40 cm (15 3/4 in). |
