Antique 17th-18th Century Turkish Ottoman Dagger
[ES340]
Antique 17th-18th Century Turkish Ottoman Dagger (Hancer) with a curved double-edged with median ridge Damascus steel Wootz blade. The ribbed horn hilt is mounted in silver and applied with settings of three rounded turquoises. It is with its original wooden scabbard covered with purple velvet with a metal chape.
REFERENSES: A very similar Turkish Ottoman dagger taken from the Turks by allied forces in the battle of Vienna in 1683 is in the collection in the Brunswick Museum (a photocopy is attached to the listing). Another comparable Turkish Ottoman Khanjar is published in the catalogue of the Turkish Military Museum collections Harbiye Istanbul by Sadik Tekeli. Page 51 (Inv No 1268).
CONDITION: The Damascus pattern is hardly visible as it is very fine. The surface of the blade is slightly pitted overall, to restore the visibility of the wootz pattern the blade will have to be repolished. The silver mounting is worn out in several places, otherwise it is in good condition.
MEASUREMENTS: The overall length in the scabbard is 35.5 cm (14 inches).
Price: $1,200.00
