Antique 16th century Turkish Ottoman Armor [ES268]
|
 |
|
Rare antique 16th century Turkish Ottoman armour "Vambrace", an upper
arm defence which sits between the shoulder plates (pauldrons) and
elbow (couter) composed of five steel plates engraved on the centre
with a tulip flower springing from a leafy tuft. The tulip is one of
the characteristic Ottoman decorative motive of the 16th century and
frequently appears on Turkish Art during the 16th century as the Iznik
ceramic, metal work, and textiles. As a result of increased relations
between the Ottoman Empire and the west, the influences of European
military equipment and art on Turkish Ottoman during this period time
were very strong. European artists and craftsmen were appointed and
were working in Ottoman Imperial manufactures beside Islamic craftsmen
creating art work with combined elements of western and Islamic
motives. This particular armor is an example of both of these
influences and must have been custom made for a member of the Ottoman
ruling class of this period time. Length: 21 cm (8 1/4 in) |
